Windjammer Update - February 2009

Windjammer Barefoot Cruises ceased operations in late 2007.  Although no formal statement of closure was ever provided by the company or the Burke family, the ships were seized in various ports for non-payment of crew wages and other operating expenses.  Even after many passengers were stranded in various ports based upon promises from Windjammer that their ships would still sail, Flotilla members came together to raise thousands of dollars to assist the crew - first to purchase food, water and fuel while they remained on the decaying ships - then to purchase transportation to their home ports.

In addition to unpaid crew, home office staff and countless vendors, many faithful Windjammer customers lost significant amounts of money in prepaid cruises and airfare, "Sail 5 / Sail 10" packages, and "La Mer" timeshare investments.   For over a year, many Flotilla members kept hoping for a miracle.  Those hopes were crushed in October 2008 when the contents of the home office were sold at public auction.

Here's what we know about the ships...

The Mandalay was sold at public auction to Angermeyer Cruises.  Part of the proceeds of the auction went to unpaid crew members.  Angermeyer provides sailing opportunities in the Galapagos Islands.  The Mandalay is now featured on the Angermeyer website, and we've heard she is currently undergoing renovations to become a 32 passenger luxury vessel.  We all hope to sail on her again one day!

The Polynesia has been sold at public auction in Aruba - the buyer is presently unknown.

The Legacy is at anchor off the coast of Costa Rica - status unknown.  Recent photos are posted here.

The Yankee Clipper is in Trinidad - status unknown.  Recent photos are posted here.

The La Mer (Discoverer) is in Trinidad - status unknown.

The Amazing Grace is in Trinidad and has reportedly been sold and is under renovations to become a floating hotel.  Recent photos are posted here.

The Flotilla also has a lot of information about other sailing opportunities...
